Some of Our Favorite Marathon Snorkeling Spots

Marathon sits at the heart of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, with more world-class snorkeling reefs in a 30-minute boat ride than you’ll find almost anywhere in the continental U.S. Here are some of the spots we visit most often and what makes each one special.

Sombrero Reef

Sombrero Reef is the most famous snorkeling site in Marathon, marked by the 142-foot Sombrero Key Lighthouse standing just off the reef. It’s a Sanctuary Preservation Area, which means no fishing, no anchoring, and a healthier reef as a result. Depths max out at about 25-30 feet, so it works for first-time snorkelers and experienced divers alike.

Expect to see brain coral and elkhorn coral formations, schools of yellowtail snapper, parrotfish, sergeant majors, and a good chance of spotting sea turtles, nurse sharks, and southern stingrays. For a deeper look at the site, see our full guide to diving and snorkeling Sombrero Reef.

Coffins Patch

Coffins Patch is a cluster of six patch reefs about 5 miles off Marathon, also designated as a Sanctuary Preservation Area. It tends to be similar to Sombrero and is one of our go-to spots when the wind is up and Sombrero gets choppy. It’s home to one of the largest pillar coral formations in the Keys and an active staghorn coral nursery our team helps maintain through our Coral Program.

Visibility is often excellent here, and you’ll see tropical fish, lobster, and the occasional eagle ray. Read our complete guide to Coffins Patch for more on what to expect.

Other Local Reefs

Beyond Sombrero and Coffins Patch, Marathon has dozens of patch reefs including the Donut, Stake and many others. Our captains have decades of local experience and a handful of lesser-known sites they’ll take groups to when conditions favor them.

Wind direction, swell, and water clarity all factor into where we go on any given day, and that local knowledge is part of why our trips consistently come back with happy guests.

Captain Curtis runs a tight, fun vessel. Ms. Lisa was AWESOME in personally guiding my 12 year 9ld granddaughter through all aspects, and details, required to attain her Diving Certification. Two days on the boat was wonderful. The depth of combined expertise of the crew was top notch. I would recommend Captain Hooks to others coming to the area.

I had the pleasure of both snorkeling and getting my Open Water dive certification through Captain Hook’s. Max Ebel was my scuba instructor and he was everything I could’ve hoped for in a teacher. He was a friendly guy, knew an incredible amount about diving, and was enthusiastic about sharing his knowledge with me. Max excelled at explaining skills and techniques clearly and breaking them down into easy to understand steps. He had excellent situational awareness underwater and constantly checked in with me to make sure I was ok, had plenty of air in my tank, and to let me know when a piece of my gear had fallen out of place. He was a pro at spotting interesting marine life and above all else, Max made me feel safe and comfortable in the water. Assisting Max during the Open Water class was Jennifer. She too was a very friendly and knowledgeable diver. Jenn helped me review many of the underwater skills, and did an excellent job fulfilling the role of my dive partner during out-of-air drills, pre-dive equipment checks, and rescue drills. Working with her was a lot of fun and in case she reads this, I apologize for my inability to keep your face out of the water during the valve tow. Finally, I’d like to give a shout out to Captain Curtis. I had the privilege of riding on his boat three separate times. Curtis was a funny and friendly guy but definitely took his responsibilities as captain seriously. While I was resting on the boat in the middle of a dive, another captain steered their vessel over the area where our divers were. Curtis immediately sounded an air horn and called them out for creating unsafe conditions for the divers. I was happy to see that diver safety was a priority for Curtis and that he didn’t hesitate to act. I was impressed by the professionalism, competence, and friendliness demonstrated by everyone at Captain Hook’s. I had a great time diving with them and hope to return again in the future.

Our family had an absolutely incredible experience with Captain Hook’s Marina & Dive Center in Big Pine Key! As first-time snorkelers, we weren’t quite sure what to expect, but choosing the upgraded snorkeling excursion was one of the best decisions we made. The extra cost was minimal and completely worth every penny. From the moment we arrived, the crew made us feel comfortable, welcomed, and excited for the adventure ahead. Their professionalism, friendliness, and attention to safety helped put all of our first-time nerves at ease. The snorkeling itself exceeded our expectations. We were amazed by the variety of marine life we encountered and loved seeing so many different species in their natural habitat. It was truly an unforgettable experience and one that created lasting memories for our family. A special shout-out goes to Ericka, our snorkeling guide. She was absolutely fantastic! Her enthusiasm, knowledge, patience, and friendly personality made the trip even more enjoyable. She took the time to make sure everyone felt comfortable in the water and helped us get the most out of our snorkeling experience. Ericka is a tremendous ambassador for Captain Hook’s, and we’re so grateful she was part of our first snorkeling adventure. If you're considering a snorkeling trip in the Florida Keys, we highly recommend Captain Hook’s Marina & Dive Center. Whether you're an experienced snorkeler or a complete beginner like we were, their outstanding crew and excellent service will make for a memorable day on the water. Thank you, Captain Hook’s and Ericka, for giving us an amazing first snorkeling experience.

Curtis and Ericka were kind, patient, and caring while I struggled to get in the boat after wearing myself out. Even while I proceeded to lose my breakfast after getting on the boat they allowed me to feel okay about it. They monitored all drivers and snorkelers to ensure we were all safe.

The crew was great even though conditions caused us to come back and miss the second dive. They gave us a 50% refund because of the early return. Great operation. Can’t control the weather. Thanks Captain John and crew.

More About Our Marathon Snorkel Trips

Which Locations Will We Go To?

Our snorkel trips go to a number of different locations in Marathon. We even have a few of our own “secret” locations that our captains have found over the years.

The weather often dictates exactly which reef we will go see on any given day.

Is Snorkeling in Marathon Safe?

Of course! You’ll be accompanied on the trip by one of our captains and a mate. Both are certified in CPR should anything happen.

As for sea creatures, you’ll see all sorts of different, beautiful ocean life!

Is snorkeling in Marathon good for kids and families?

Marathon is one of the best places in the Florida Keys to introduce kids to snorkeling. The reefs are shallow, the water is warm and calm most of the year, and our crew is patient with first-time snorkelers of every age. For a full breakdown of what to expect, age recommendations, and tips for bringing children on a reef trip, see our guide to family snorkeling in Marathon with kids.

How long do snorkeling trips typically last?

Our snorkeling trips last about 4 hours between the boat ride to the reef, diving two sites and the boat ride back.

How deep are the reefs in Marathon?

Most of the reefs we visit sit between 6 and 30 feet deep. Sombrero Reef ranges from about 6 to 30 feet, and Coffins Patch is typically 10 to 30 feet. That shallow depth is part of what makes Marathon such a great snorkeling destination, because the coral and fish life sit right beneath the surface where you can see everything clearly.

How do I get to Captain Hook's in Marathon?

We’re located at Mile Marker 53 on Vaca Cut, right across from Aquarium Encounters. Our address is 11833 Overseas Hwy, Marathon, FL 33050. Parking is free on site.

What time are the Snorkel trips?

Snorkel and dive trips depart every day at 8:30AM and 1:00PM.

Do I need any snorkel gear?

Captain Hook’s will provide everything you need!

Are there any snorkeling spots accessible from the shore in Marathon?

While most premier snorkeling sites in Marathon are best reached by boat, there are limited shore-accessible options. Sombrero Beach offers modest snorkeling opportunities near its rocky areas, though marine life sightings may be limited compared to offshore reefs.

What's the best time of year to snorkel in Marathon?

Snorkeling in Marathon is good year-round. Water temperatures range from the mid-70s in winter to the mid-80s in summer, and visibility is typically best from May through September when the seas are calmest. Spring and fall offer the best balance of warm water, light crowds, and good visibility. Winter trips are still excellent, though we recommend a wetsuit or rash guard for added warmth.

What will I see on a Marathon snorkel trip?

The reefs around Marathon are part of the only living coral barrier reef in the continental United States. On a typical trip you can expect to see brain coral, elkhorn and staghorn coral, sea fans, and large schools of tropical fish including parrotfish, yellowtail snapper, angelfish, and sergeant majors. Many trips also encounter sea turtles, southern stingrays, nurse sharks, barracuda, and the occasional eagle ray.
