Sombrero Reef
Sombrero Reef is the most famous snorkeling site in Marathon, marked by the 142-foot Sombrero Key Lighthouse standing just off the reef. It’s a Sanctuary Preservation Area, which means no fishing, no anchoring, and a healthier reef as a result. Depths max out at about 25-30 feet, so it works for first-time snorkelers and experienced divers alike.

Coffins Patch
Coffins Patch is a cluster of six patch reefs about 5 miles off Marathon, also designated as a Sanctuary Preservation Area. It tends to be similar to Sombrero and is one of our go-to spots when the wind is up and Sombrero gets choppy. It’s home to one of the largest pillar coral formations in the Keys and an active staghorn coral nursery our team helps maintain through our Coral Program.

The weather often dictates exactly which reef we will go see on any given day.
Is Snorkeling in Marathon Safe?
Of course! You’ll be accompanied on the trip by one of our captains and a mate. Both are certified in CPR should anything happen.

How long do snorkeling trips typically last?
Our snorkeling trips last about 4 hours between the boat ride to the reef, diving two sites and the boat ride back.
How deep are the reefs in Marathon?
Most of the reefs we visit sit between 6 and 30 feet deep. Sombrero Reef ranges from about 6 to 30 feet, and Coffins Patch is typically 10 to 30 feet. That shallow depth is part of what makes Marathon such a great snorkeling destination, because the coral and fish life sit right beneath the surface where you can see everything clearly.

What's the best time of year to snorkel in Marathon?
Snorkeling in Marathon is good year-round. Water temperatures range from the mid-70s in winter to the mid-80s in summer, and visibility is typically best from May through September when the seas are calmest. Spring and fall offer the best balance of warm water, light crowds, and good visibility. Winter trips are still excellent, though we recommend a wetsuit or rash guard for added warmth.
